In this article we will talk about Fate / Prototype AND The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II. If you are not accustomed to Nasuverse or its most famous franchise, Fate / Stay Night, follow the links and enjoy reading.
Before concluding the exploration of the Fate / Stay Night franchise, we want to focus on some works that, although not part of the core of the franchise but are more of a bonus side dish, even more than the works treated previously, represent an in-depth study worthy of mention among the already numerous works that make up the Nasuverse.
Back to the origins
During our journey through the Type-Moon publications we got to know the background of Fate / stay night and how the original draft, dating back to the high school years of Piglet, has undergone many changes to suit the company's audience.
Although these changes proved to be the right move to make, it is natural that Nasu felt a certain attachment to his original vision of the work, which the author decided to always keep on hand waiting for an opportunity to bring it back to the light inside the new skeleton formulated over the years.
It was on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Type-Moon, celebrated through the Carnival Phantasm series, that Nasu was able to show off his original idea through a short animated short film, structured like a trailer, on the original concept now known as Fate / Prototype.
As is natural to expect, it is possible to review a lot of what has been proposed in Fate / Stay night in an embryonic form, worthy of the name Fate / Prototype, but the differences present are sufficient to lay the foundations for a narration able to stand on own legs.
Fate / prototype
Fate / Prototype tells of the second Ritual of Heaven's Feel, the War of the Holy Grail of Tokyo, with a system regulated in an almost identical way to the ritual used in Fuyuki except for the fact that the Masters have a degree associated with sects higher angelic hierarchies.
Similarly to what happened with Fate / Zero and Fate / Stay Night, the Prototype conflict takes place about a decade after the previous one, during which the father of the protagonist, Ayaka Sajyou, lost her life leaving the young girl in the grip of her own traumas and insecurities.
Just as in the final version, the protagonist will evoke Saber, whose identity is that of the famous King Arthur Pendragon, after finding herself under attack by the Lancer-class Servant, Cù Culainn, in the service of Misaya Reiroukan, the Prototype version of Rin Tohsaka.
Differences from Stay Night
The other known Servants taking part in this conflict are Gilgamesh as Archer, Perseus (replaced by Medusa in Fate / stay night) as Rider and commanded by Aro Isemi, Hercules as Berserker in the service of Sancraid Phahn, prototype of Kirei Kotomine and the Beast of the Apocalypse as Beast, replaced by Caster and under the command of Manaka Sajyou, sister of the protagonist and prototype of Illyasviel von Einzbern.
The latter was also the protagonist of Fate / Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver, a series of five Light Novels published between 2013 and 2016 that narrates the events of the First War of the Holy Grail in Tokyo in a similar way to what Fate / Zero he did for Fate / Stay Night., and for Fate / Labyrinth, his spinoff aimed at expanding the Type-Moon universe through the journey between time lines and alternative realities that Manaka will go through, visiting scenarios familiar to us, until reaching the body of Noma, the Master of Arturia in a new alternative conflict.
The legend revisited
Between 2014 and 2015 Ufotable broadcast its animated adaptation of the Unlimited Blade Works route.
During the second half of the Type-Moon series the marketing of the first blu-ray box of the series begins, containing as an extra a story written by Kinoko Nasu in person aimed at deepening the character of Saber in a new way compared to what was done in Fate / stay night.
The story, entitled Garden of Avalon, therefore traces the life of Arturia Pendragon through the eyes of different characters, starting from his period under Sir Ector and Kay until his fall in the battle of Camlann.
The chapters of the work want both to put Arturia in a new light, emphasizing the tragic aspect of the character and his life in the name of self-denial, and to propose the version of the Nasuverse of the Arcturian Cycle in order to contextualize it and deepen it under the rules and the reality that Nasu has built over the years.
Beyond the Grail War
Although Fate is completely centered around the Holy Grail War, we also know that it is a rather insignificant event in the eyes of the Wizarding Association, which does not view conflict as a fruitful form of research.
This, however, does not mean that it cannot be a meaningful experience for all those who participate in it and somehow manage to survive.
The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II
It is precisely this aspect that Sanda Makoto and Mineji Sakamoto want to show us with their series of Light Novel entitled The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II, narration focused entirely on Clock Tower, in the UK, giving us a glimpse into the life of Waver Velvet at following his survival to the Fourth War of the Holy Grail of Fuyuki and his acquisition of the title of Lord El-Melloi II, with which in addition to exercising as a professor for the Association he will take part in many events of the Nasuverse and with which he deals with solve investigations and mysteries of the thaumaturgical world like a modern Sherlock Holmes of the world of magic.
Gray, a mysterious girl who became his apprentice, will be the narrator and precious contribution to Waver's vicissitudes.
The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II is a perfect work to take a look at the reality of Fate outside the isolated conflict between Master and Servant, to deepen the broad spectrum world showing us not that of antiquity that the Servants they have lived, but the modern one that has left the myth and the divinities behind but above all to give us a more specific picture of the organization and structure of a secret society with so much power and influence in the world created by Nasu and the events that are narrated inside, showing us many faces known as Luviagelita Edelfelt, Atrum Galliasta, Olga Marie Animusphere, Flat Escardos, Caules Forvedge Yggdmillennia and Toko Aozaki outside the contexts in which we are used to seeing them.
The publication began in late 2014 to end with its tenth volume in May 2019.
From June the animated adaptation of the work began, which deals with adapting the Rail Zeppelin case with the addition of original and unpublished content by the Troyca studio.
